The Hamptons are here

July 14, 2009

I finally made it out to the hamptons this weekend, for the first time this summer (pretty crazy, huh?). It’s been great, albeit a little windy. I came out to see my summer fling, and we’ve been here for four days. Isn’t that something. Summer flings are fun, which I’d forgotten. The key though, is making sure it’s not someone you like too much, and also not someone too unlikable. I mean, like them all you want, but the point of a summer fling is that it ends come fall, which is tough if you like them too much. It’s always nice when you have a lot in common though, and it’s ok if you spend 4 days straight together. Hope you’re week’s going well.

and the party rages on

July 7, 2009

I hope everyone had a good 4th of july weekend! I would say that 90% of the people I know were in east hampton. The rest were kind of scattered to be honest. I stayed in new york, for what may have been the first time. The city during 4th of july is certainly an interesting place. There’s not really much for anyone to do because everything’s closed. I cooked for myself most of the weekend (something I don’t do enough, so that was nice), and come time for the fire works, I made my way to my roof, set up some lawn chairs, and made myself comfortable. I know I could have, perhaps should have, been at the thompson les penthouse, where the views tend to be spectacular, but I thought I’d stay on the west side, be a little closer. Also, sometimes, you just don’t need to surround yourself with so many people.
This week is looking to be a crazy one. Hypothetically, we all got a day or two to recover from the 4th, and now the city is preparing to knock our socks off. Truth is, I’m tired. But as my dad says, that’s no excuse. Today, the christie’s staff exhibition opens. It should be impressive- after all, you don’t have to be artistically gifted to work there, but they know their stuff and wouldn’t show you their work if it wasn’t worth it (Reception, 6-8pm, 20 rockefeller plaza). It’s also still everyone’s birthday, so stop by the dinner party at lulu for nicky digital, starting at 8pm tonight. For something with a slightly stronger beat, good folks will be at both santos and gallery bar tonight. See you around!

Depp as Dillinger

July 2, 2009

Last night, the new beau and I made our way to Public Enemies, the new Johnny Depp move, directed by Michael Mann. It really was something. It had all the grit and grime of a good ganster movie- enough to make any guy sit at the edge of his seat, while there was also an involved love story, and some pretty sad parts, particularly near the end. It was almost enough to make a girl cry. All in all, between the cars and the guns and the sex and the love… who wouldn’t want to see it. Plus I would have to say it was one of Depp’s best performances in a while. He plays a serious character, and you really believe every moment.

Beauty Bar, part II

July 1, 2009

Monday night, old friend Maxwell57 turned 21, and to celebrate, invited friends out to the new Beauty Bar Brooklyn. This remake of an old classic is certainly quite a thing. Not really all that different from the original, however their deliveries are a little behind (on Monday they hadn’t had a delivery in 3 days, and so ran out of many a beer), and their kitchen has yet to open for business. The decor is fun and familiar, with old-school hair driers for lamps above the bar, as well as seats along the wall away from the bar. The DJ booth has been place in the front, as a window display, which will I’m sure make for some interesting moments in the future. The sound system could use a few tweaks, or that might have been the choice of the various DJs through the night to have every song at a different level, and often almost too loud. Overall though, I would say it’s a fun and friendly place. If you’re looking for familiarity on the other side of the bridge, it’s the place for you.

dream come true

June 26, 2009

so, it’s the summer, and we’re in new york, that means lots of time spent in the east hampton, montauk, and amaganset. just imagine how much better life would be like if you could party worry free in the part where you’re not staying? i’m a montauk girl myself, but i enjoy making forays to friends in east hampton, but don’t embrace the drive home at 2 am.

welcome lilybug scooters! it’s a service perfect for those nights when you may have had a little too much. you call someone, and they arrive on a mini, fold-up scooter, which they then pack into the trunk of your car, and drive you home. they actually have a variety of services (e.g. they’ll pick up your prescriptions or dry cleaning, or drive you to the airport), including one where if you’re having a party they’ll know to be on call for your guests so they don’t drink and drive. they’ll happily take you from east hampton to montauk, or in the other direction.

enjoy your weekend folks!
