The Board of Trustees at Brandeis University voted unanimously yesterday to close the Rose Art Museum and begin a long-term sale of its collection. The Rose houses the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in the Northeast. This is a huge loss to the university, but the president of the university announced that it is a gesture and statement of the university’s unwavering commitment to academics. By selling the collection, the university hopes to regain some of the assets lost in the financial collapse late last year (particularly since one of its largest donors was a Maddoff victim). Unfortunately, I’m not sure this will do quite what the university hopes it will- this isn’t exactly the best time to sell art, particularly as the art world closes in around itself. We shall have to see what happens.
