Isabel Toledo

Last night I went to the reception for the opening of the retrospective of Isabel Toledo’s work that FIT has put together in conjunction with Toledo herself, and others. The collection is beautiful, with pieces spanning from her first collection in 1986, to her current collection, including the dress Michelle Obama wore at inauguration earlier this year (on loan from Mrs. Obama). You can really see the progression, but also the continuity in Toledo’s work, as her clothes become clearer, more sophisticated, and more artful, but motifs from her earliest collections continue to appear in her most recent. Toledo herself was dressed in a simple white sheath dress last evening, but still stood out from among the many well dressed, and some costumed, people in the crowd. I should have taken photos of attendees, but I failed in that regard. I do however have quite a few photos of the collection:
